Excerpt
Name your price. Slade knew he ought to accept the deal, and just be glad John Carmody had seen fit to claim him, albeit posthumously. All he had to do was say yes, and he could buy that little spread he’d had his eye on for the past couple of years, pay cash for it, instead of depleting his savings for the down payment. But something prevented him from agreeing, something that ran deeper than his utter inability to act on impulse.
Indirectly, John Carmody had, at long last, acknowledged his existence. He needed to be with that knowledge for a while, work out what it meant, if anything.
“I’ll get back to you,” Slade finally reiterated, climbing up behind the wheel of his truck and putting on his hat. “In the meantime, I’ve got a county to look after.”
With that, he shut the truck door.
Hutch thumped the metal hard with the heel of one palm, then turned and stormed away, rounded the hood of the Whisper Creek pickup, yanked open the door and jumped into the driver’s seat.

Guest Post: Do you prefer Slade or Hutch?
Well, heck, that’s a hard one, because I’m crazy about both of them.  Slade is the strong, silent type, physically patterned after a young Rob Lowe (I had his shirtless Vanity Fair cover framed and kept it on my desk throughout.)  He’s big on honor and integrity, and he’s really gun-shy because of a love gone wrong.  Hutch is strong, too, but he’s outspoken and reckless.  Where Slade will examine an issue from all angles, Hutch tends to jump right in and worry about the details later.  Because they’re both LLM heroes, they have certain qualities in common: they want a woman who is an equal, and a partner, they love kids, they love animals, and they will always try to do the right thing.  Like “real” people, they sometimes get it wrong, despite all their good intentions.  They both have a sense of humor, Slade’s being dry and understated, while Hutch’s is more wisecrack dependent.  They never look for a fight, but they never run away from one, either.  I’m often asked if I wish real men were like my heroes—truth be told, I think there are a lot of very fine men out there, doing their jobs, loving their women, raising their children to be good citizens.

BIG SKY COUNTRY

 June 2012

“With engaging characters and lovable animals, this second story in the Creed Cowboys trilogy is a sure hit for the legions of cowboy fans out there.”
RT Book Reviews on Creed’s Honor

Two hostile half brothers—one legitimate and one not—are each left half of their deceased father’s prosperous ranch, but even this sprawling estate isn’t big enough for these two feuding cowboys.  They’re headed for one big final showdown—winner takes all.  BIG SKY COUNTRY (Harlequin HQN, June 2012, $7.99 U.S./$9.99 CAN.), is the first book in the new series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller, set in Parable, Montana—where rugged cowboys and feisty cowgirls abound.
It’s the secret that’s not much of a secret in the small rural town of Parable, Montana—that County Sheriff Slade Barlow is the illegitimate son of wealthy rancher John Carmody. But Slade’s existence has never once been acknowledged by his father, who lavished all his resources and attention on his legitimate son, Hutch Carmody, while Slade grew up barely scraping by with his mother in a small trailer attached to her hair salon, the Curly Burly. With the town’s whispers fueling their hatred, Slade and Hutch have spent their whole lives brawling with each other.

So when the half brothers are notified upon their father’s passing that according to his wishes the very profitable Whisper Creek Ranch and the fortune that goes with it is to be divided equally between them, both are left stunned.
But Hutch has no plans of sharing anything with his half brother. After all, he’s the golden boy who’s been groomed since birth to become master of Whisper Creek and he’s determined to get his way. He makes Slade a whopper of an offer for his share of the ranch, but Slade is in no hurry to give in to Hutch, who’s always had everything handed to him on a silver platter, including the attention of the beautiful Joslyn Kirk, former town prom queen and spoiled brat who slunk out of Parable years ago in disgrace but now is back….

Parable is the one place Joslyn Kirk swore she’d never set foot in again. She was a self-centered little rich girl back then until her stepfather cheated everyone in town out of their savings and she and her mom were forced to slink out of Parable in the middle of the night like criminals. But Joslyn spent years working to secretly pay back—out of her own hard-earned money—everyone her stepfather had bamboozled. Now Joslyn is home to face the people she ran away from years ago. But people in Parable haven’t forgotten the past and aren’t so accepting.

Slade wants to convince Joslyn that she’s not responsible for her stepfather’s mistakes. She has nothing in her past to apologize for. But Slade isn’t so comfortable with his own family issues.
Why doesn’t he sell the ranch to Hutch? Is it because he wants to claim his birthright, or is he just making things difficult for his half brother? Either way, Hutch is going to force Slade’s hand. These cowboy brothers are heading for a final Wild West showdown in front of the whole town with everything riding on the outcome.

Character Word Association:Lily (Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown)

Today I welcome Lily from Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown. She's going to play the Word Association Game with me today, I'll say something and she'll say the first thing that comes to mind.

Lake Superior: mystery
guy: high school
mermaid: solid muscle
school: rumors
swimming: naked
love: home
legends: Grandpa’s stories
refreshment: lemonade stands
hot: Calder
music: harmony
car: none
stars: Orion
beach: sand between my toes
animal: unpredictable
favorite thing: Crap, just one? Well . . . the first thing that comes to mind is that song from The Sound of Music (you know...that one song about raindrops on roses?), but maybe Tennyson’s poem The Lady of Shalott? Or maybe rain on the roof? No . . . I think my most favorite thing is just waking up and knowing my family is safe and warm and still sleeping in their beds.

Thanks Lily for joining us today.  I know I can't wait to read Lies Beneath.  Read on below for more about this very intriguing book.

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him

Waiting On Wednesday (26)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I found this one in my Shelf Awareness newsletter yesterday and it sounds like such a great read, I can't wait until it comes out in July!

A Simple Thing by Kathleen McCleary
Release Date:  July 24, 2012

How far would you go to protect your children? Would you do it at the expense of your marriage? How far would you go to protect yourself?

For Susannah Delaney, the answers lie thousands of miles away, off the northwest corner of Washington state. When Susannah discovers her young son is being bullied and her adolescent daughter is spinning out of control, she moves them to remote Sounder Island in the San Juans to live off the grid for a year. Susannah hopes to save her children from the risks they’ve encountered at home, and to come to terms with her own haunted past. But the move threatens her marriage to the man she’s loved since childhood, and her very sense of self.

For Betty Pavalak, who first moved to Sounder to save her own troubled marriage, the island has been a haven for more than fifty years. But Betty also knows the guilt of living with choices she made long ago and actions that cannot be undone. The unlikely friendship between Susannah and Betty ignites a journey of self-discovery for both women that brings them both home to what they love most. A SIMPLE THING moves beyond friendship, children, and marriages to look deeply into what it means to love and forgive—yourself.

Doesn't that sound really great?  What are you waiting on this week?  What's something from BEA you are dying for?

Armchair BEA Day 2: Best of 2012

Welcome to Armchair BEA Day #2.  Today's suggested topic is best of 2012.  So I've been going over what I've read so far this year and I must admit it hasn't been the best reading year, not in quality, but in quantity.  I'm far behind on my goals, but the good news is I have read a lot of great books.  Here are some highlights of my "best of" so far this year:

YA:

Cinder by Marissa Meyer, cyborgs, cinderella and the future, what's not to love?  I honestly didn't know whether I would like this one, but I was sucked in from the first page and now cannot wait for the next installment.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver, romance, dystopian, just amazing. Read it if you haven't, swoon with me if you have.  Must get my hands on Pandemonium!

The Selection by Kiera Cass, reality TV, big dresses, a girl who bucks the system. Loved it!

Romantic Suspense:

When the Smoke Clears by Lynette Eason, Ms. Eason is quickly becoming my go-to author for Christian romantic suspense and this tightly woven suspense thriller is everything it should be and more.  Add to that it's the start of a great new series with some characters from an old series that return for cameos :)

A Perfect Storm by Lori Foster, broken characters, great suspense, interesting romance and revisiting all the characters from the previous three books make this a major winner for me.

General Fiction:

The Good Father by Diane Chamberlain, okay I'm a little biased because this one takes place near me but that set aside I could not put this book down.  Interesting issues, good suspense to keep me interested and great characters.  Love, love, love it!

Women's Fiction/Romance:

Just Down the Road by Jodi Thomas, Jodi Thomas does it again with her Harmony, Texas series. I probably read this one the fastest of the series and that is saying something.  Loved it and can't wait for more. If you haven't started this series, you simply must!

Barefoot in the Sand by Roxanne St. Claire, her return to contemporary romance from romantic suspense is a winner for me, this is the start of a series about four friends and a great start.

Romance (Novella):

On One Condition by Diane Alberts , Ms. Alberts has quickly won me over with her writing and I love this romance.  Great characters, a fun and sassy plotline and great romance.  What more does a girl need?

There are others, but this touches on the highlights of my year so far.  What is one (or more) of your favorites of this year?

Armchair BEA Day 1: Introductions First

Wecome to Armchair BEA Day #1.  This is introduction day for all of us who are staying at home while this wonderful book convention is going on in New York City.  One year I plan on going, but this isn't the year.  So I plan on participating in Armchair BEA all week and I'm even helping host a Twitter party on Thursday night starting at 8pm, so stay tuned for that.  But until then enjoy the daily postings.

  1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?  My name is Crystal, I'm a Mom, a Wife, and an avid reader and therefore a blogger.  I also work in Marine Sciences and really enjoy my job.  I have been blogging for a little over 3 years now and I got started with the simple plan to help keep up with the books I read and how I felt out about each book I read.  In it's simplest form, it was suppposed to be reviews of my library books and books on my TBR piles.  It has quickly morphed from books I owned or checked out to books from publicists/authors and others in the buisiness.  I also have expanded past just book reviews, though I am lagging a bit at the moment.  I am hoping Armchair BEA will give me the spark I need back.
  2. What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2012?  I'm currently reading Guilty Wives by James Patterson adn David Ellis.  James Patterson is still one of my guilty pleasures.  I know a lot of people don't necessarily like him and I don't enjoy all of his new books, but this one has been good and different so far.
  3. What is your favorite feature on your blog (i.e. author interviews, memes, something specific to your blog)?  I am really starting to enjoy author interviews.  I am getting better at questions to ask and feel like I am coming into my own with these.  Plus I love the chance to interact  with authors and learn something personal and professional about them at the same time.
  4. If you could eat dinner with any author or character, who would it be and why?  I think I would choose Stephen King because he is honestly the one who bridged my love of reading from childhood to adult reading when I was a teenager (not so much YA back then).  I read It and was in love so I would love a chance to talk to him and just sit and listen to him for an hour.
  5. Have your reading tastes changed since you started blogging? How?  Yes they have in a way. I'm coming full-circle at the moment.  I came in reading suspense and romance, then the blogging world introduced me to the world of young adult and the many variations out there in this genre/age group of literature.  But now I'm kind of coming back to the adult books I read to begin with.  I am falling in love with romance again and suspense again and really enjoying it.  I still read YA too, but not to the full exclusion of books I use to read.  I am also tackling my tbr pile that has been neglected as well.  I am looking at it less like a job and more like an enjoyment again.

Author Interview + Giveaway: Diane Alberts (Divinely Ruined: Book One in the Divine Temptations Trilogy)

Today I get to welcome the lovely Diane Alberts back to my blog.  You may recall she visited a few weeks ago touring with On One Condition which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Today she is stopping by for an interview and giveaway for Divinely Ruined which is Book 1 in the Divine Temptations Trilogy.  I am in the middle of this one and it is really great so far, it got me through a grueling bike ride at the gym last night with pleasure so that says a lot.  So grab you your favorite beverage and enjoy the interview, learn about Divinely Ruined and enter to win at the bottom of the post.

Welcome back Diane, to My Reading Room!

Thank you for having me here today! I’m so excited to be back to talk about Divinely Ruined, the first in the Divine Temptations Trilogy.

When you were a child what is the one thing you really remember wanting to be?

Ironically enough…an author! Ever since I was a little girl, I was writing stories and entering contests. I even remember winning one, and getting to attend a Young Author’s Convention of some sort, but the details are foggy. All I can remember is sitting there, talking to authors and thinking—this is what I want to be.

How amazing, I've heard of some authors that it really was like that.  I think I wanted to be an astronaut, but writer passed through my brain at one time or another.  I sure am glad you wanted to be a writer!

What is your favorite snack food?

Ooooh…Cheetos. I only get them at parties because if I buy them, I’ll sit and eat the whole bag. They’re addicting and so, so bad for you.

My second favorite snack would be peanut butter cups. Especially when they melt a tiny bit and get all ooey-and soft. Mmm….

Yummy snack foods and I can eat peanut butter cups, now I need to go see if I have any . . .

I remember that you have four children, where is your favorite place that you have taken them?

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I love, love, love going there. We go twice a year with the in-laws—once in May and once in October. It’s so laid-back, gorgeous, and fun there. I even wrote a book that takes place there, I love it so much.

Moving on to the book now, what made you choose using an angel who isn’t so angelic as a main character in Divinely Ruined? (which by the way, I love the concept)

I really wanted to write an angel book that is like no other angel book. All of the angel books I’ve read tend to have a common theme—but I wanted to write one that showed the human side of angels. I also wanted to show what, in my world, angels had to do to earn their wings.

There is strenuous testing, real life trials, and the hardship of not being tempted by their human emotions. Rebecca has a particularly hard time with that last one.

Tell us about Divinely Ruined in 120 characters or less?

Rebecca doesn't want love or a family. Yet Tony tempts her to give it all up for a chance at just that--even if it means losing her wings.

Dish, who was your favorite character?

Oh, I loved Rebecca. She’s just so much fun with her constant battle between doing what she knows she should do—and denying that she wants to do the complete opposite of that. And her temper is extremely amusing, especially when she is cursing out Tony.

What do you have up next for us impatient readers?

I actually just had a new release come out the other day. It’s also with Entangled Publishing, and it’s called Try Me (Take a Chance #1). Look at those smoking abs:

Besides that, the next Divine Temptations Trilogy book will be out soon!

Very, very nice abs Diane, I'll definitely have to Try Him, I mean read Try Me . . .

Thanks Diane!

Thanks so much for inviting me back! It’s been great visiting again!

Blurb:
She finally meets a decent man–after she’s oath-bound never to touch men again!
Rebecca’s life sucked before she became an angel. Crappy apartment, awful jobs, abusive boyfriends–it was no wonder she jumped at the chance to escape it all and become a real live angel. The problem is Rebecca’s not very angelic, and she’ll have to do more to earn her wings than end her love affair with the word f–er, frick.
Especially when she’s assigned to save single father Tony Weis, whose less-than-pure thoughts wreak hell on a telepathic angel’s nerves. It’s all Rebecca can do to keep her hands off him…but when she loses her memory injuring herself to save Tony’s daughter, now it’s Tony’s turn to be her angel and care for her. But will Tony’s devotion tempt her from her angelic path, even if it means being human again?

My Friday Love (1)

I just found this meme but it looks like a lot of fun, especially today's question.  It fit well for what I am reading this week.  My Friday Love is hosted by Bewitched Bookworms so head over there to link up and see everyone's answers.  So this week's question is:

Which Guy did you meet this week in literature that is swoon worthy??

It's been a slow reading week due to being busy so I have mainly been with one guy ;)  And his name is Nick Gautier.  Yes I am reading:

Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon is the third book in the Chronicles of Nick and I am really enjoying this series.  I loved Nick in the Dark Hunters series (which I am woefully behind on now) so it is really cool to see his back story now.

So I am swooning over sarcastic yet witty Nick this week.  Sure there are hunkier guys that make their appearances, Kyrian and Ash being two of them, but I am a sucker for a sarcastic witty guy.  And to top it off, Nick would do anything to please his Momma.  What a boy.  I love Nick as a character, but it's more like love of a son here.  But he's still swoon-worthy because how he is in these books is how I hope my sons will turn out (okay minus some of the sarcasm).  He is trying to get through that awkward teenager phase, do the right thing, and he has to do it while dealing with all these crazy things coming after him at the same time.  Poor guy.  I'm just glad he has some good friends and protectors around to help him.

So if you've read the Dark Hunters, you should check out this series, yes it's YA, but it's fun to see Nick.  If you haven't read the Dark Hunters series, this is a great way to start, it doesn't give anything away and it's a great intro and you get to meet Nick.

Who are you swooning over this week?  And make sure you enter my Splash into Summer giveaway, click on the graphic on my sidebar for a $10 Amazon GC.
