Book Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

My rating: 4.5/5.0
Very amusing and fun look at what if zombies were a problem in the world of Eliza Bennett and Mr. Darcy.

About the Book:

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—& the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty & arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—& even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism & thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read.
My Review:

A lot of the story is the same as it should be but the addition of zombies and girls being trained in the violent arts makes it interesting. Nothing can replace Pride and Prejudice as a wonderful love story, but this fun look at it is definitely amusing. Some of the off color comments that Mr. Darcy makes had me rolling with laughter. Nothing took away from the book at all - it just added an extra layer to it.

A fun and enjoyable read for Pride and Prejudice fans who like a little violence and horror. It's really not too bad about the violence and horror though - it's still about society and the interplay between Darcy and Eliza.

"Right, I understand that, Mrs. Freeman." Mia twirled the phone cord around her fingers and resisted the urge to use profanity with a client. "But if you'll try to understand my position here. I cannot force the school district to recognize selling drugs as an after-school activity."
From Stretch Marks by Kimberly Stuart

I just thought these lines were too funny (Mia is a social worker). The book is really cute so far and I can't wait to read more of it.
