Book Tour: Night Sky by Jolene Perry

Night Sky Summary

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums - she's way more than distraction. Jameson's falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honesty somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.

Book Review & Blog Tour: Shore Excursion by Marie Moore

My Review
I love the idea of a cozy-mystery set on a cruise ship with a travel agent protagonist.  And with a flamboyant, fun best friend as her sidekick is even better.  Shore Excursion is pure fun, it's a mystery, it's travel and it's getting to know interesting characters of all ages.  To me that made it a very original and fun book.

I never thought about the fact that travel agents are a dying breed, but that is a fact that is highlighted by the main character, Sidney Marsh.  Sidney is leading a group of older tourists who call themselves The High Steppers on a cruise through Scandinavia.  And though most of the group is older, there are a few younger ones in the group who stand out and not in a good way.  First I love the eccentricities of the group.  As you meet each one and get to know them a a little bit you see they are all different and interesting.  Sidney likes most of them and knows how to handle most of them.  Sidney is truly a whiz with people and great at her job.  But when members of her group start showing up dead she's not quite sure what to do, but she knows she has to do something.

This is where the mystery sets in.  A lot of the plot early in the book is spent getting to know the characters and I like that, then the mystery comes about and things get down to business.  Several plausible suspects are offered up and I never could decide which one I thought it was, so Ms. Moore does a wonderful job with the plotting of the mystery.  I was kept guessing and was kept entertained through the whole book.  I loved the cruise angle.  It kept it fresh because who wants to be stuck out on the ocean with a murderer especially someone you might know.

Sidney is an enjoyable character, she's down to earth, she's likable because she truly cares about people.  I liked her southern charm, and her determination to make a go of the career she has chosen even though it is slowly dying out.  I look forward to reading more mysteries in this series and I feel Ms. Moore has done a terrific job in writing the first installment in this series.  If you enjoy mysteries, especially cozies or ones with some humor then you will enjoy Shore Excursion.  It hooks you early in the book and keeps you entertained until the very last page.  Sidney is the person you would like to be (or at least I would) sweet but with backbone, she knows what she wants and she's determined to get it, but she won't hurt people to do it.  I like her and can't wait to see more of her.

My Rating: 4.5/5.0

Shore Excursion Book Summary
Paperback
Price: $13.95
ISBN: 9781603818742
Pages: 230
Release: April 1, 2012

Travel agents are a vanishing breed, but Sidney Marsh, a New York transplant from Mississippi, is holding her ground--at least on land. She is the tour leader on a cruise through Scandinavia for a group of eccentric senior citizens who call themselves the High Steppers. Sidney expects her days to be filled with long meals, shopping expeditions and visits to museums, churches and fjords. But this cruise is anything but routine. There is a killer on board, targeting the High Steppers and quite possibly herself.

After the first suspicious death, the captain and his crew are grimly determined to carry on as usual. Disgusted with their inaction, Sidney decides to take matters into her own hands and launch her own investigation. She enlists the halfhearted help of her friend and business partner, the flamboyant and fun-loving Jay Wilson. Suspects abound. What about those two handsome young men who stay mysteriously aloof? One of them has his eye on Sidney. So does another passenger, far too charming and again too young to fit the "High Stepper" mold. Then there's Captain Vargos, the arrogant ladies' man whose plans to thwart Sidney's investigation might include seduction.

Who is that crew member shadowing Sidney? Is the theater really haunted? Even the High Steppers themselves are not as predictable or harmless as they seem. The closer Sydney gets to the truth, the less she understands. Shore Excursion is the first book in a new mystery series featuring amateur sleuth Sidney Marsh.

Marie Moore Bio:

Shore Excursion is Marie Moore’s first novel, but not her first writing experience, and like Sidney Marsh, she is a native Mississippian. She graduated from Ole Miss, married a lawyer in her hometown, taught junior high science, raised a family, and worked for a small weekly newspaper, first as a writer and later as Managing Editor. She wrote hard news, features and a weekly column, sold ads, did interviews, took photos, and won a couple of MS Press Association awards for some of her stories.

In 1985, Marie left the newspaper to open a retail travel agency. She completed agency and computer training with Airlines Reporting Corporation, Delta Airlines and TWA, earned her CTC (Certified Travel Counselor) designation, and joined the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). For the next 15 years, she managed her agency, sold travel, escorted group tours, sailed on 19 cruises, and visited over 60 countries. Much of the background of Shore Excursion comes from that experience.

Marie also did location scouting and worked as the local contact for several feature films, including Heart of Dixie, The Gun in Betty Lou’s Handbag, and Robert Altman’s Cookie’s Fortune.

In mid-1999, because of her husband's work, Marie sold the travel agency and moved to Jackson, MS, then New York City, Anna Maria Island, FL, and Arlington, VA. She and her husband now live in Memphis, TN and Holly Springs, MS.

Marie is a member of Sisters in Crime.

Author Interview: Lesley Kagen (Good Graces) Tribute Books Tour

Q. You're new book, Good Graces, is a sequel to the very popular, NYT' bestseller, Whistling in the Dark.  What challenges did you face writing a sequel?
A. My own fears.  Sometimes sequels don't live up to readers' expectations and I hate letting people down.  I was also concerned that I'd be able to recapture the voice of the narrator, Sally O'Malley.  And the feel of the neighborhood. I wasn't sure how to write a sequel either.  How much back story should I include, etc.  Seems like everything has worked out rather well, though!
Q. You didn't publish your first novel until you were 57 years old.  Why so late?
A. (Laugh)  I was busy being a mother, actress, and restaurateur.
Q. Do you find that your other "occupations" help you as a writer?
A. Being a mother has taught me patience and endurance, which you need a ton of to be an author.  The publishing process is arduous.  There is a temptation all along the route to give up.  Being an actress gives me a good feel for dialogue and character development.  Also the pace of a story, which is so important.  Owning my own restaurant offered lessons each and every day in dealing with people. ( I've also heard a few great stories while buzzing around tables.)
Q. What part do you like best about writing?  The least?
A.  I feel grateful that I have the opportunity to make a living at what I love.  The part I like the least is the frustration I can feel sometimes when I can't express how I'm feeling.  Grrrr.
Q. What do you most about being an author?  The least?
A. I love meeting and corresponding with people who read my work.  I attend a ton of book clubs and so enjoy them.  These women know how to knock back the wine.  The part I like the least is dealing with people who feel that because you're in the public eye they have the right to treat you rudely.  Grrr.
Q. Would you consider Good Graces a "stand alone" novel?
A. Yup.  But I do think if you read Whistling in the Dark first it would contribute to your enjoyment of the story.
Q. You often write in the voice of a child.  Is that tough?
A. In some ways I find it easier than writing in an adult voice.  Not so much emotional armor to penetrate.  Kids speak their hearts.  (And I don't have to use as many big words:)
Q. Who inspires you?
A. My family. I had a tough childhood and the sun never sets without me giving thanks for my loving, gorgeous, brilliant children and grandson.  I'm pretty nuts about my husband, too.
Q. Animals always seem to play a part in your books. Why?
A. I love dogs and horses.  I've never been without either one.  I horse showed throughout my childhood.  And my daughter is a brilliant competitor in the hunter/jumper field.  My dogs--my German Shepherd, Johnny, and my little poodle, Daisy--- are adorable and crack me up.
Q. Anything else you'd like to add?
A. Just to wish everyone a happy holiday and the best New Year ever!  And to thank them for their support!

Book Summary
Lesley Kagen returns with the sequel to her national bestselling debut, Whistling in the Dark.

Whistling in the Dark captivated readers with the story of ten-year-old Sally O'Malley and her sister, Troo, during Milwaukee's summer of 1959. The novel became a New York Times bestseller and was named a Midwest Honor Award winner.

In Good Graces, it's one year later, and a heat wave has everyone in the close-knit Milwaukee neighborhood on edge. None more so than Sally O'Malley, who remains deeply traumatized by the sudden death of her daddy and her near escape from a murderer and molester the previous summer. Although outwardly she and her sister, Troo, are more secure, Sally's confidence in her own judgment and much of her faith have been whittled away. When a series of disquieting events unfold in the neighborhood-a string of home burglaries, the escape from reform school of a nemesis, and the mysterious disappearance of an orphan, crimes that may involve the increasingly rebellious Troo-Sally is called upon to rise above her inner demons. She made a deathbed promise to her daddy to keep Troo safe, a promise she can't break, even if her life depends on it. But when events reach a crisis point, will Sally have the courage and discernment to make the right choices? Or will her false assumptions lead her and those she loves into danger once again?

Lesley Kagen's gift for imbuing her child narrators with compelling authenticity shines as never before in Good Graces, a novel told with sensitivity, wit, and warmth.

Lesley Kagen's Bio:

I was born in Milwaukee and spent my early years in a great working class neighborhood, much like the one where Whistling in the Dark and Good Graces are set.

I attended Marquette University for one year, fell in love, and followed my boyfriend to New York City. I lasted about six months. I was so intimidated, I spent most of my time running from my apartment to the grocery store and back to my apartment, which was located above a 24 Hour Soul Record Store. Hence, I have the dubious ability to recite every lyric to every James Brown tune ever recorded.

After returning to Milwaukee, I enrolled in the University of Wisconsin where I majored in Radio and Television. I fell into a job as a morning drive DJ on one of the country's first alternative radio stations—WZMF. I got to interview lots of very cool rock n' rollers like Frank Zappa, Hendrix and John Lennon.

In 1976, I moved to Los Angeles, where I began a ten year career working for Licorice Pizza record chain where I produced, wrote and voiced thousands of commercials as Lesley from Licorice Pizza. When I set out to expand my career, I ended up doing on-camera commercials, a couple of Movies-Of-The-Week, and a Laverne and Shirley.

I met my husband, Peter aka Sushi Man, in Malibu, which is pretty funny considering he was from Milwaukee as well. While we both loved living in California, after the birth of our kids, Casey and Riley, we felt this overwhelming need to return to the roost, so we moved back home in 1990.

Well, that's about it. Oh, wait. The writing. I adore it. I crave it. But it wasn't until Casey went off to college, and teenage Riley made it clear that any form of communication between us was to be restricted to—"With or without pepperoni"—that I found the opportunity to sit down and let 'er rip. I hope you love reading Whistling in the Dark, Land of a Hundred Wonders, Tomorrow River and Good Graces as much as I loved writing them.

Guest Blog: Is It Hard to Get Published by David W. Huffstetler (Blood on the Pen)

Is it hard to get published?
by David W. Huffstetler

I’m not sure “hard” is the right word, maybe “darn near impossible”, but that’s a phrase, isn’t
it? Seriously, it can be very difficult and often frustrating, but I’ve found a number of things
that seem to be common among agents and publishers, and I’ll start with the process. We will
assume that you have written a terrific story, but that isn’t enough.

The dilemma we face with major publishing houses is that they only accept submissions
from an agent, and agents seldom want to represent someone who has not already been
published. It may sound unfair, but you just have to accept that as the world we live in. So,
for an unpublished author, you can approach agents and/or you can submit your work to
independent publishers. I found the website Preditors and Editors to be very helpful. It lists
and rates publishers and agents, as well as offering links to help with things like query letters.
Remember, you can always get an agent, but you may wish you hadn’t. There are those who
will represent you if you pay them a fee, and there are subsidy presses that will print your
book, if you pay them. Take care or you can find yourself with a closet full of books, trying to
sell them to your friends and family. If you’re considering self publishing, I suggest looking at
Amazon (Kindle) and Createspace.com (paperback). Their services are free, and they list your
book on Amazon.com; however, they don’t promote it.

If you choose traditional publishing, then the first communication is the query letter, and it
must be perfect, no typos and no errors in grammar. The one-page synopsis of your story
needs to be just as perfect. If they spark the interest of the agent or publisher, then they
will ask for a partial manuscript, probably the first 50 pages. Did I mention that needs to be
perfect? If it isn’t, you’ll never get past the gate keepers.

Now, you have thrilled them with your partial, and they ask for the full manuscript. Of course,
you want it to be error free too, but the first half is particularly important. By the time an
editor has read that far, he or she has probably decided if this is a story they want. There is
much more to say about the content of your manuscript and the craft the editors look for, but
I am running out of words. I am writing another blog to address that, and you can find the
schedule for this blog tour at bloodonthepen.blogspot.com. I hope to see you there.

Book Summary
Jack Harden is a modern-day Texas Ranger haunted by his wife's death a year ago.

But when a murderer strikes, he is called into duty. Now he must battle the urge to kill the drunk driver responsible for her death and the hunger to kill himself as he hunts for a serial killer who wants him dead.

Elsie Rodriguez is assigned to report on the murders for her newspaper and ordered to stay with Jack Harden. He's old school, tough, and doesn't want her there, but, despite his gruff manner, the big Ranger triggers something inside her. Something more than just her Latin temper.

Can she pull him back from the edge of sanity? Or will death win again?

David Huffstetler's Bio:
Educated in Dallas, North Carolina, David Huffstetler holds degrees in Engineering and Business Administration. He has worked in the area of human relations and spent fourteen years weaving through the maze of politics, including participating in a Federal Law suit as Chairman of the Workers’ Compensation Commission, with a sitting governor over issues of separation of powers. David has served on Boards of Directors for numerous professional organizations including Crime Stoppers, SC Workers’ Compensation Educational Association, SC Safety Council, the SC Fire Academy, and the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Workers’ Compensation. He has advised governors and legislators on matters of public policy and legislation. His wealth of experience is broad and brings deep insight to his writing.

David’s work as a senior manager with a major industrial concern took him to international venues and exposures that helped feed his urge to write Disposable People, a dramatic expose of the working conditions and politics that engulf undocumented workers. Disposable People is a top-ten “Suggested Book” at Tufts University in Boston, MA.

He turned the frustrations and rejection that plagues thousands of yet-to-be-published authors into the heralded mystery/thriller Blood on the Pen, with a serial killer disposing of literary agents. David, an avid history buff, led him to write Dead in Utah, the story of Joe Hill, the controversial musician and union organizer accused of a double murder in 1914.

His books receive praise from mystery readers across the globe.

As an editor, David edited a treatise on the South Carolina workers’ compensation laws, as well as, Shannon Faulkner’s novel Fire and Ice. Shannon was the first female cadet at the Citadel. She received national publicity for her federal lawsuit and was a guest on Good Morning America.

As an editor, public speaker, and seasoned professional, David has appeared on television and radio, and has lectured on the East Coast, California, Canada and Mexico.

David currently lives in Lexington, South Carolina with his wife, Trudy.
