Today I welcome C.J. Ellison author of Avoiding Mr. Right, the second book in the Wild Side series. If you didn't read Vanilla on Top, the first book in the series, run and get it, it's wonderful fun. While it's not necessary to read them in order, why would you want to miss a good book? For now, please grab your favorite cuppa and sit and enjoy some of C.J.'s favorite kitchen items.
I'm sure we all have our favorite items that cut down on kitchen drudgery. For me, I have the old standbys and some new ones, too.
1) Coffee maker. Sure, lots of us have this "gadget" but how
many of us take it for granted? That trusty appliance breaks down and a
lot of us would be lost. Even if you drink de-caf like I do it's still
an important device in our kitchen.
2) Microwave. Hey, I can still remember a time when
we got our first microwave. Sure, it was the 80s and most kitchens come
with them asa standard item now, but I'd say it's still a gadget we
don't want to ever be without.
3) Coffee bean grinder. I used to buy only ground coffee, but hubby started buying beans. Without that grinder I'd be screwed for morning coffee everyday.
4)
Tea strainer. Say what? It's this little wire mesh gadget that hangs
inside a coffee cup when you pour hot water over loose tea leaves. Some
people use a wire ball, but I prefer this simple device for making fresh
tea.
5) Kitchen Pro Vegetable Dicer, as seen on TV. And
yes, I bought mine on TV years ago when it first came out. Now you can
find them at the CVS. I love to make soups and this device is fantastic for chopping large and small sized veggies to
cook with. I've found if the veggie is small enough and hidden by thick
flavorful broth and pieces of pasta, beans, and/or meat, my kids will
eat it without complaint.
6) Crock pot. Since it's not a standard appliance in
a kitchen I'm calling it a gadget. Love my crock pot. We even use it in
the summer.
7) Electric skillet. My husband
uses this one more than me. We'll cook large batches of food for dinner.
Freezing one portion and serving the rest. The second portion will make
an appearance in a couple of weeks. The electric skillet is great for
two to three pounds of ground meat, chicken breasts, sausage and peppers… the list goes on and on.
8) Bootle opener. Uncorking wine without one is tricky, and sometimes messy.
9) An in-sink Garbage Disposal. We've lived in houses without one, and I definitely prefer to
have one. Don't shove small bones, raw animal fat, uncooked Quinoa
grain, or the white stuff used in some flower vases for hydration down
there either. From personal experience I can attest that a plumper is
usually needed to correct such slips.
10) Hand-held Can Opener. I grew up with an electric
one. It even mounted directly under the cabinet, talk about fancy! ;-)
Now I prefer to un-clutter my counter tops so we've had a non-electric one for about two decades.
