Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Banned Books Week Hop here at My Reading Room.  This Hop is hosted by I Am A Reader Not A Writer and I Read Banned Books.  This hop is all about Banned Books in honor of Banned Books Week which runs September 24 - October 1, 2011.  I'm a big proponent of not banning books and will make sure with my guidance and discussion that my sons read as many of the banned and challenged books that interest them at the appropriate ages.  I still wonder why To Kill A Mockingbird would be challenged.  I love that book - it was just about the only assigned book in high school I liked (I had already read it in middle school).

We can move on to more recent books, Twenty Boy Summer, Speak, Crank, all of these have a place and talk to girls (and boys too) about issues that face them maybe in ways their parents didn't think too.  Maybe one of these books will speak to a teenager and stop a destructive behavior.  Maybe it won't, maybe it's just a book and that's fine too.  Okay off my soapbox now.

My giveaway is simple, it's $15 towards one book at The Book Depository, open Internationally if The Book Depository ships to your country for free.  The only catch, the book should be a banned or challenged book, some can be found on this page here, you can also google around for others.  That page is a listing of the top ten challenged books (or series) in the last 10 years.  Some examples are below.  To enter all you need to do is enter your name and email in the Rafflecopter below, all other entries are optional.  Thanks for stopping by, make sure you stop by the other blogs and enter their giveaways as well!

I just read The Hunger Games and don't think it's worse than anything kids are seeing on tv. I will admit it's probably more appropriate for mid- to older teens than tweens.

There are quite a few actually, mostly the classics such as 1984. Though The Hunger Games is my pick for newer books.

I was a child of the 70's so I have read almost all of the banned books from that era. My favorite is hard to choose, but George Orwell's Nineteen Eight Four and any of Kurt Vonnegut's (especially Cat's Cradle) would have to be at the top.

Posted on Murder She Writes but reposting where I can, to say thank you for raising this issue.

Went to American Library Association website for list of banned/challenged books.

Happy to say, I’ve read most of the classics, or consciously chose not to read a few, but was floored to see To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; 1984, by George Orwell; A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Ernest Hemingway; Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell; and Sophie’s Choice, by William Styron, to name a few on the short list.

A commenter there pointed out that the Bible often is banned.

I'm not sure which banned books is my favourite of the ones I've read...I've liked most of the ones that are challenged so much. The Hunger Games, The Giver, Speak, Harry Potter...and yes, Twilight, too, they've all been books that I've enjoyed so much. :D I also really liked Captain Underpants when I was younger...and to be honest, it's still pretty awesome! :D If I had to choose a favourite out of those though, I'd probably choose The Hunger Games. :D

Thanks for this fabulous giveaway! :D
I hope you read some awesome books for this year's banned book week! :D
