National Library Week April 11-17 (and a giveaway)

I must confess I did not know about National Library Week until I was reading my blog feed and came across this post by Kate on her blog, The Neverending Shelf.  She is donating books to her library for comments on her blog.  What a great thing to do especially in these days of the sagging economy.  I know libraries are one of the ones taking big hits.  I work for a state university and know that our library has taken a hit (and I don't work in the library).  So go check out Kate's post and help her donate a book to her library.

I personally love my local library.  I have raved about it before and will continue to.  I walk in and they immediately walk to the reserve shelf to get my books - that is how well they know me :)  The staff is nice, they are willing to look into books you want ordered and they just go the extra mile.  We can reserve books through the library system which for me is a 3-county system (I don't live in the big city obviously).  The selection of books is wonderful.  My local library also just moved into a new and bigger location.  It is great.  They have a great children's section and do their best to get all the recent bestsellers in plus a lot of other great books.  The YA section keeps expanding and our children's librarian has done a lot to help with that.

I took my oldest son for the first time when he was 4 - we got his library card then.  He loves it and now they visit it every other week with school and I usually take him the weeks in-between because he's not allowed to check out Goosebumps books when he goes with school, but I let him and they are his favorite books right now.  My youngest son has been going with us since he was about 3, but he likes to play on the various toys more than look at books, so I usually just pick a few out and show him and he usually nods yes and we check those out.  When he learns to read I see him checking out books right and left like his mom, dad and older brother.

So you can see I do love my library.  I will be heading there this afternoon to get my latest reserve books.

Do you use your local library?  If you don't why not?  If you do, what is your favorite thing about it?  Have you checked out any books this week?

Comment to win a book off of my giveaway shelf which can be seen here.  Open to US/Canada and the giveaway will end next Wednesday 4/21.

I normally end up at my local library at least once a week either picking up books and dvds or dropping them back off. I think what I like and appreciate most about my library is the great selection of books that they have available and if they don't have what I want they will order it for me. Everyone who works there is nice and happy to help.

Unfortunately I don't use my local library much. I live very rural, and the local library is only open for a couple hours 2 days a week (Tues & Thurs). It is often hard to get there when it is open. We do occasionally stop by though if we are passing by and see they are open, and I let my daughter check out a few things. At least they have a drop box so you can return things at any time. Not a big selection though. They do have a loan system with other county libraries, but often more trouble than it is worth since you can only keep things on loan for 3 weeks without paying overdue fees.

I definitely use my local library often. They just built a new one in my area and it is such an improvement from the old one. I do wish they got newer books more often but it is still a pretty good library.

I don't use my local library because their online system isn't user friendly and I don't care for their reservation system. *Thanks* for the giveaway!

I used to frequent the library enough that they should install frequent flyer miles, but now since taking up reviewing, I don't need to use the library. However I do go to library book sales, and other events they have. Also on donation day, I'm always there too!

Thanks for the giveaway!

When my girls were little we practically lived at the library. The Children's librarians know my girls. One librarian told my dd that until she, my dd, is 42 she must give her a hug everytime she's in there. She calls my dd "Smiley" and says it always makes her day to see my dd come in.

Yes, Yes, yes we use the library. Now that my girls are teens we make it weekly to the library.

We love books. My house is being over run by books.

I don't go to the library as often as I use to since I started going back to the Friends of the Library Old Book Sale and bought used books on line..And now we have a new & used book store.
Back in the early 90's I would go almost every week and get 10-12 books to read. I did not have extra money for books and the Library was my savior.
I think Librarys are one of the most important parts in the school system and sould be supported more than they are.

Yes I use my local library! They probably hate me because I request so many books online:) I feel like I am constantly there. I don't know what I would do without the library. Even my dog knows the word library because then he knows he gets to go for a ride:)
Thanks for the giveaway!

I got my daughter her card when she was 5. I have a picture of her with her card on my blog.
She was so excited.

I use my library weekly. I love that we can connect online and reserve books. In Hawaii there are different Islands and the library will transfer books if ones close to me dont have that title.

I love the staff at the library right up the road from me. I live close to a handful of libraries and visit all of them frequently: I like to resale racks.

I use my library all the time almosat every book I read is from the library. I go about once a week and constantly have books on hold. All the librarians know me by name and say ooh look the bookshelves clean. One of last few times I went I got called the best patron and I would never lates.

I put so many books on hold at a time. I log on to the website about everyday. I probably have earned them money for getting so many books or at least that's what they told once for getting so many the library earns money?!

I lived for the library when I was growing up. Summer vacation break meant borrowing 20-30 books on "summer leave" aka extended borrow and just working down the pile over the weeks. It was great.

I buy books (new & used) now, due to work and time constraints getting to the library is difficult. But I fully support libraries 110%.

I use my local library too often. I find that if I borrow the book and give it a try is better than just buying the book off the shelf and not enjoying it as much. I think the libraries like local schools need to be well funded so that kids in the future can have a interest in reading. Without libraries, many children would be at an disadvantage. I love my library and wish we can all fund it to keep it alive.

I am ashamed to say that I really haven't used my local library in quite awhile. When I moved to my current town about a year ago, one of the first things I did was to get a library card. I think one of the major reasons I don't use my library much is because I truly like to own my books. I enjoy keeping books in case I want to read them again. Also, I a very big fan of sharing books with friends and family. Whenever I read a book that I love, I want to lend it to others.
Thanks!

I actually set aside Monday as my "library day" so I can see what new YA books they have and any new ones for sale. So yes, I do take advantage of my library because who wouldn't want to take home and read a book for free?
