A Lucy Stone Mystery #19

My Review:
This was my first Leslie Meier Lucy Stone mystery and it won't be my last.  Even though I started with book #19 I didn't see it as a problem.  Yes I would have known a little more about the characters if I would have read the previous 18 books, but since this is a mystery and the books are focused on the mystery plot it wasn't too much of a problem coming into book #19 and learning the characters on the fly.  I felt like Ms. Meier gives good background into each of the main characters so that I never felt lost in Easter Bunny Murder and that it felt like a stand-alone.  With that being said, after finishing this one, I want to go forward with the series as new books are released and also read from the beginning of te series as well.

The plot starts as the annual Easter Egg hunt seems to be a no-go and a man dies in front of everyone on the lawn of prestigious Pine Point.  Lucy, the main character of this series, is a reporter for the local paper which is just a weekly and she mainly handles features not investigative reporting, but she just can't seem to help herself and she has to get to the bottom of what is going on at the local mansion and what is happening to resident millionaire VV.  This starts the book and her sleuthing. With the help of others in the town, Lucy starts to get to the bottom of things.  I like this book because she doesn't seem to always be in danger like in some books.  This was what I really think of as a cozy mystery.  She's solving the crime, but kind of out-of-the-way.  But as she gets closer and closer things get more and more interesting.

I was drawn in by Lucy and her friends and the other people that populate the town.  I love small town settings, I'm from a small town.  I'm familiar with knowing most everyone and having everyone know your business.  I like how Lucy is proper and nice and tries to go about solving the murders in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.  She's just a nice lady.  I also like the slices of her family life that are shown.  The mystery was interesting and it kept me guessing.  By the end I was able to see the clues that were there, but I missed them when I read, so that was good.  Some may find it predictable but I didn't.  I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

Over the last year I have started to read more and more cozy mysteries and I am glad I got the chance to try out Leslie Meier.  The Lucy Stone series has great promise for me and I look forward to reading more books in the series.  Easter Bunny Murder was a strong entry in the series at least for me, but I have nothing so far to judge it against.  It was an enjoyable read, fit the full bill of a cozy for me and kept me entertained for hours.  I found it hard to put down and it was another book I found easy to read even with life and TV going on around me.  I felt like I was right in the middle of the chaos and mystery that surrounded Lucy.  I also loved the Easter theme, and Lucy's grandson Patrick,  he reminded me of my boys when they were just a little smaller.  Kudos to Ms. Meier on a job well done!

My Rating: 4.5/5.0

About the Book:

Lucy Stone’s on the hunt for a killer with a deadly case of spring fever…

Spring has sprung in Tinker’s Cove, and Lucy Stone has a mile-long to-do list. From painting eggs with her grandson, to preparing the perfect Easter feast, to reviving her garden after a long, cold winter, she hardly has time to hunt for a killer with a deadly case of spring fever…

Lucy has always loved covering the annual Easter egg hunt for the Pennysaver. Hosted by elderly socialite Vivian Van Vorst at Pine Point, her luxurious oceanfront estate, it’s a swanky event where the grown-ups sip cocktails while their children search for eggs that are as likely to contain savings bonds as they are jelly beans. But when Lucy arrives with her three-year-old grandson, VV’s normally welcoming gates are locked, and a man dressed as the Easter Bunny emerges only to drop dead moments later…

Lucy discovers that the victim is Van Vorst Duff, VV’s grandson, and soon learns that not all is as it seems at idyllic Pine Point, where the champagne and caviar seem to be running dry. Always a social butterfly, VV has been skipping lunch dates with friends, and her much-needed donations to local charities have stopped with no explanation. Maybe she’s going senile, or maybe her heirs are getting a little too anxious to take over her estate…

As Lucy gathers a basketful of suspects, she’s convinced someone’s been hunting for a lot more than eggs, and she’ll have to chase the truth down a rabbit hole before the killer claims another victim…

Author Interview and Book Review: Vanilla on Top by C.J. Ellison

Today I welcome C.J. Ellison, author of Vanilla on Top, a romance novel that if you pick up you better prepare yourself some time so you can finish it. I started it and was even reading it while watching one of our favorite TV shows and I never do that!.  So grab your favorite cuppa and sit and learn a little more about D.L. Bogdan and check out my review of Vanilla on Top.

What three things do you need in order to write?
A relatively quiet space, no headache, and an idea.

What's your favorite season?
Fall. I love the color changes, the crisp smell in the air, and of course -- Halloween!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I eventually want to travel the world, but right now I'd love to be healthy enough to bring my kids to Zimbabwe to visit friends of ours stationed there for a few years. It's a chance of a lifetime and I'd love to be able to share it with them!

What intrigues you most about the concept of speed dating?
It's nothing I'd like to try, that's for sure! I think the fact that normal adults want to participate in such an event proves, without a doubt, that the hope of falling in love and having a happily ever after is still in many people's hearts.

What's the first sentence of Vanilla on Top?
"The bartender approaches us, carrying our drinks, a lopsided grin on his aging face."

How would you describe Vanilla on Top?
I would call it a journey of self discovery containing light BDSM elements. Some readers have complained VoT wasn't a true BDSM or "femdomme" book, but it was never meant to be. First and foremost, it was two people letting go of their past and trying something out of their comfort zone.

Dish, who’s your favorite character?
Hmmm… that's a hard one. I loved both Heather and Tony so much I can't let go of them! Before this book finished the editing process I had outlined a second story for them and started it. I eventually want three stories for the couple.

What can we expect next from you?
I'm working on the second novel in the Wild Side series. It will star a new couple, Carla and Andy. This book will submitted to my publisher by the end of the month (but not come out til perhaps the summer) and then I'll get back to Death's Servant. It's the prequel novel from my V V Inn series, detailing how the hunky werewolf, Jon, came to be by Vivian's side.

Thanks, Crystal!!
My Review:
Whew, is it hot in here or is it just this book?  Talk about steamy.  Talk about attraction.  Talk about an author that can write a love scene.  C. J. Ellisson can do it.  But that's not all, she can also write characters the reader can relate to, she can write a story that absorbs the reader and she can write a romance that is both hot and believable.

Heather.  I love Heather, what woman can't relate to Heather. She wants to be more, she wants to be sure of herself and she finds a way for Tony but is she really this persona she is putting on for him?  Or is she something in between?  I loved her act, her demeanor and her real person.  I loved how eventually they began to merge and her self-confidence grew.  And Tony, wow Tony.  He's hot, he's hot for Heather,  he's an idiot when he's around her at first and that's unusual for him so the reader knows he's falling for her and that makes him all the more endearing.  There is some mystery surrounding him.  The reader knows that there is something he's not telling at first and that makes it interesting.  He's eager to please and again he's just hot.  So what's not to love?  I like how both characters grow during the book, and you know me I'm big on the growth.  In romance it's key, they have to learn something about themselves and these two characters do.  I loved watching them learn too.  And their attracting is off the charts, they cannot keep their hand to themselves and you'll just have to read those parts for yourself. ;)

The plot was interesting and engrossing.  I honestly sat down to read this while my husband and oldest son went to Boy Scouts. They returned about an hour and a half later and we usually watch an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Netflix as a family.  We did, but I kept sneaking reads of this book while watching and I never do that.  I always watch Buffy and I usually can't read with the TV on, but I could do it with this book.  I was caught up in the spell woven by CJ Ellison.  The plot had sucked me in and by the time we were watching TV I was right in the thick of things and I could not put the book down.  I had to know what would happen next and how things would work out.

Vanilla on Top may be more "vanilla" than some people want it to be, but you can't deny that it has the heat and the attraction between the two main characters.  Again I loved Heather and Tony and their romance completely worked for me and the heat and their play was quite fun to read.  The plot had me enthralled and I could not get enough of this book.  I was excited to read in the interview above that she has more books in mind for Heather and Tony because I definitely would love to see more of them. But for the time being I will be happy to see the next Wild Side book and see what happens with Carla.  Ms. Ellison has a way with a romance book that makes me want to read more of her work and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Author Interview, Book Review and Giveaway: Melting the Millionaire's Heart by Linda Morris

Today I welcome Linda Morris, author of Melting the Millionaire's Heart, a wonderful and hot snowbound romance for these cold nights. So grab your favorite cuppa and sit and learn a little more about Linda, read my review and enter the giveaway to win a copy of Melting the Millionaire's Heart.

What three things do you need in order to write? Thanks so much for having me here today, Crystal. What do I need to write? First off, there's my
laptop. I don't use any special writing software --just good ol' Microsoft Word. I've experimented
with different software and I was overwhelmed by all the bells and whistles, so I like to keep it simple. Music is another thing that helps me. If I'm writing a first draft, it has to be an instrumental. Listening to lyrics get in the way of my writing! If it's a revision, though, I can listen to music with words. (Don't ask me why, I know it's crazy.) I listened to "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" (the jazz standard by Ella Fitzgerald) to keep me in the holiday mood while I wrote "Melting the Millionaire's Heart" in June.
The third and most critical thing I need to write is child-free time. I love my boy, but an eight-
year-old dying to tell me all about his latest video game is not conducive to writing a sensual
love scene, or anything else, for that matter!

What's your favorite season?
Oh, a toughie. I love so much about fall: the fall leaves, crisp weather, sweaters, the smell of
woodsmoke, trips to the orchard, homemade apple pies, football, but I can never put it out of my
mind that dreaded winter is right around the corner. So I think I'll have to go with spring as my
favorite: Lovely soft rains, buds on winter branches, greening grass, bird song. Besides all that,
I'm always raring to get out to my flower garden by say, March.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Hmmm, I traveled quite a bit when I was younger, but then I married a man who doesn't like to
travel, so that's slowed me down a bit. I'll say England. I'm a lifelong Anglophile who has never
made it there yet, but my husband is a bit of an Anglophile too, so I think I have a reasonable
shot at dragging him there someday!

I love the idea of being snowed in with a man. What made you choose the snowed in romance
idea?

Because I love the idea of being snowed in with a man too! I think many women do. We all like
the idea that fate could play a role in true love by stranding us with the right guy. And a snowfall
can be so beautiful: Everything is so quiet and still, you truly feel alone in the world.

What's the first sentence of Melting the Millionaire’s Heart?

"Kayla Johnston tore her gaze from the road just long enough to check the readout on her ringing cell."

How would you describe Melting the Millionaire’s Heart?
It's a sexy, funny, snowed-in romance story, set against a serious backdrop of special needs
kids. Kayla, my heroine, is a teacher at a private special-needs school and winds up snowed in
with Ryan, who, unbeknownst to her, is the millionaire she's supposed to be schmoozing to get
a donation for the school. Ryan is tired of women who want him for his money, and sees being
stranded with one as a nightmare scenario, so he tells a wee fib about his actual identity.

Dish, who’s your favorite character?
Kayla. She's a person with her heart in the right place when it comes to special needs kids, but
she's sick of having to kiss up to people for their money, to get donations for the school. Maybe
she's naïve, but she thinks people ought to help kids because the kids need help, not out of
their own self-interest.

What can we expect next from you?
I have a romantic crime caper called By Hook or By Crook coming out in wide release in April.
(It's already available for Kindle users at Amazon.) I've also just submitted a contemporary
romance, so with any luck, you'll be seeing that one soon too!

Thanks Linda!

My Review:
I found Melting the Millionaire's Heart to be a quick easy and fun read.  I liked Kayla and Ryan from the start of the book and I'm a sucker for snowbound romance so Ms. Morris had me from the start.  It's short and easy to read, but not short on content.  Kayla and Ryan's relationship develops enough for my taste during the book.  I was comfortable with how things happen and boy did they heat things up.  There is a conflict that has to be resolved that felt real and I like how it resolves in the end.

With great characters that feel like real people you can relate to and romance that makes the Valentine season heat up Melting the Millionaire's Heart is the perfect book to warm you up on these waning cold winter nights.  I think it also renews your hope in true love which is what I love about romance books.

My Rating: 4.5/5.0

About the book:
Title: Melting the Millionaire’s Heart
Author: Linda Morris
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 92 pages
Release Date: December 2012
ISBN: 978-1-62266-799-4
Imprint: Ever After

Special-needs teacher Kayla Johnston writes off any shot at New Year’s Eve romance when she’s summoned to a fundraising event for her school at the remote estate of a wealthy would-be-donor. But when a massive snowstorm hits and Kayla careens off the road, the sexy stranger who rescues her brings to mind cozy fireplaces and steamy midnight kisses…among other things.

Reclusive entrepreneur Ryan Langford may be missing his own fundraiser, but being marooned in a cabin with Kayla beats ducking a room full of people after his money any day. Too bad she’s so irritated with the ” gazillionaire” who ruined her New Year’s Eve that he feels like he has to lie about his identity. But when the sparks fly and they fall into each other’s arms, Ryan knows he’s made a big mistake. Will she be able to trust him once the snow melts and the truth comes out?

About the Author:
Linda Morris is a multipublished writer of contemporary and historical romance. She writes stories with heart and heat. Her latest book, By Hook or By Crook, will be coming in spring of 2013 from the Wild Rose Press.

When she’s not writing, working, or mommying, she’s doing yoga, reading, working in her flower garden, or baking delicious things she probably shouldn’t eat. She believes that there are two kinds of people: pie people and cake people, and she is definitely one of the former. Her years of Cubs fandom prove she has a soft spot for a lost cause. A beat-up old copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss’s Ashes in the Wind that her mom bought for her at a garage sale years ago was her gateway drug into the world of romance novels. Her all-time favorite romance writers include Laura Kinsale, Patricia Gaffney, Elizabeth Delancey, and Marjorie Ferrell. Current favorites include Julie Anne Long, Erin McCarthy, and Shannon McKenna.

Author Interview, Review & Giveaway: Frosted by Wendy Sparrow

Today I welcome Wendy Sparrow, author of Frosted a delightful novella about dashing Jack Frost that will make you want to grab your hot cocoa and curl up by the fire to enjoy this wonderful romantic read. So go grab your favorite cuppa and sit and learn a little more about Wendy and read my review of Frosted.

What three things do you need in order to write?
Quiet, Mountain Dew, and my laptop. With two kids, quiet is at a premium so sometimes, when
my son is next to me on the couch watching Minecraft walkthroughs, I put in my earbuds and
crank up a MP3 of white noise to block the world out. Then, of course, anyone following me on
Twitter knows that my bloodstream is about 98% Mountain Dew. Finally, there are few things
I guard as seriously as my laptop—it’s practically an extension of me—well, okay, it’s not—
though that would be an interesting idea for a story.

What's your favorite season?
With a winter-themed book out, I should say winter, but the truth is that I hate being cold. Brr. I
didn’t have to reach very deeply inside me for Kate’s feelings on the subject. Give me a snuggly
blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, and a book, and it can snow all it wants—as long as I never
have to get out in it. On the other hand, I love fall. I love the colors of fall leaves. I love haunted
houses at Halloween and overeating at Thanksgiving. I wish fall lasted forever.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Oh, I have a bucket list for this…and I just went to New Orleans last year which was on my
bucket list, so that leaves the Florida Keys for the United States, but all of Europe outside of
there. I’ve really wanted to visit London for a long time.

I read your brief bio and it mentions talking to yourself. My son calls me on this all the time and one time said “Mom, can’t you do it quietly in your head”. He’s seven and quite a character. Have your kids ever mentioned your talking to yourself, are they more accepting than mine, or are you not quite as bad as me?
Most of my conversations with myself take place on Twitter—so they’re on record. (Reason
#1,203 I will never be president.) Although, really, anyone with kids spends quite a bit of time
talking to themselves—they just don’t realize it. “It’s time for school! Why are you still in your
pajamas? I told you to get dressed twenty minutes ago.” “No, you didn’t!” “Yes, I did.” “Well,
I didn’t hear you!” Yeah. I think that’s the appeal of writing—someone you created has to do
whatever you tell them to.

What's the first sentence of Frosted?

Kate skirted the snow as if it were boiling, bubbling lava.

How would you describe Frosted?
Well, it’s your basic girl sees boy in the ice while ice-skating. Girl falls through the ice into
the winter world where she marries the boy who is king. Girl runs back to the mortal world.
Boy changes weather patterns to try to get her back before finally dragging her to Denver to
convince her to be his ice queen. There are a few complications of course—like the boy is
losing his powers because he’s been chasing her, and the girl has trust issues. Oh, and, of
course, the minor detail that the boy is Jack Frost, king of winter, but, at its core, it’s the age-old
boy meets girl story.

How did you come about using Jack Frost as a character basis for your novella?
Three years ago, I had this dream about a girl walking very carefully on the sidewalk, avoiding
stepping in the snow, and she looked down into an icy puddle and saw Jack Frost staring back
up at her with a look of frustration because he’s trying to get her back into his world but she
keeps avoiding the cold. I didn’t write the story right away, but one day I heard Kate say in my
head the line of dialogue, “Jack, you’ll have to find yourself a new queen.” Her voice was so
clear…the rest fell out of my head onto the keys so fast that my laptop was smoking.

Dish, who’s your favorite character?
In Frosted? Easy peasy. It’s Jack Frost. He’s a cross between Peter Pan and Thor. Plus, he’s
hopelessly in love with Kate. There’s something so endearing about a guy willing to manipulate
weather to get the girl he loves.

What can we expect next from you?
Oh, I should have a few more happily-ever-afters coming from Entangled shortly. But I also just
got the wonderful news that a memoir piece I wrote will be in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising
Kids on the Spectrum. It’s due out in April which is Autism Awareness Month.

Thanks Wendy!

Thanks for having me on! *blows cyber kisses and gives air hugs*

My Review
I honestly can say I didn't know what to expect when picking up Frosted.  Hmmm, a story about Jack Frost meeting a girl who falls through the ice and making her queen and then letting her go and finally chasing her down to convince her one last time.  Sounds interesting, but can it work in a novella?  The guy on the front was telling me it could and I honestly don't even go for blondes (my husband is dark headed and I've found my type is mostly dark-headed men).  I mean look at him, doesn't he scream read this book :)  So I did and I was delighted.

Yes I will be honest and say both characters, Kate and Jack frustrated me at times.  But that was part of the story. They were both in love but both afraid to admit it or didn't know how to admit it. One was scarred by life, one hadn't really lived a life.  I found them both to be interesting characters and once the novella really started moving and the story started really revealing itself I found myself understanding them and when I understod them, I liked them more and more and I fell in love with them and the story.  Wendy does that, she makes you fall in love with the story which is magic itself.

I loved the use of the Jack Frost tale as the background with the winter kingdom and an immortal who controls the weather, even goes so far as controlling the weather for the woman he loves.  It was a fascinating read with a different background even though as Wendy simply states it is at it's core a book of boy meets girl.  However she does add layers to it that make it so much more.

Frosted becomes a very a very enjoyable read that I could hardly put down.  I love the novella because it ensures a quick read, yet it's a complete read.  It develops characters and develops a storyline without leaving you wanting too much more like a short story does.  Frosted willl read quickly and you will want more but only because you will grow to love Kate and Jack.  So grab you hot cocoa and a blanket and if it's cold enough, bundle up near a nice warm fire and enjoy Frosted.  It may take away some of the chill of these waning winter days.

My Rating: 4.5/5.0
About the book:

After falling through the ice one cold day, Kate is saved by a mysterious man named Jack and ends up marrying him. Come to find out, she's committed herself to the king of winter himself. Now Kate has cold feet about their life together...and cold everything else.

Forced to return to the frozen north for her job, Kate hopes to sneak-in and out of Colorado before Jack knows she's there. After all, she's been living in sunny Florida for seven years, and he hasn't managed to come see her. But Jack has one last chance of convincing his runaway bride to come back to him, and he won't give up until he breaks through the ice that's frosted her heart.

About the Author:

At home in the Pacific Northwest, Wendy Sparrow writes for both an adult and young adult crowd. She has two wonderfully quirky kids, a supportive husband, and a perpetually messy house because writing is more fun than cleaning. She enjoys reading with a flashlight under a blanket—the way all the best books should be read—and believes in the Oxford comma, the pursuit of cupcakes, and that every story deserves a happily ever after. Most days she can be found on Twitter where she’ll talk to anyone who talks back, and occasionally just to herself.
