On Thursday I received:
Beach Trip by Cathy Holton which I won from Kelly at her Enroute to Life Blog - thank you Kelly and Cathy - I'm looking forward to reading this one!

A reunion of four friends becomes a cathartic journey into the past in Cathy Holton’s luminous new novel.

Mel, Sara, Annie, and Lola have traveled distinct and diverse paths since their years together at a small Southern liberal arts college during the early 1980s. Mel, a mystery writer living in New York, is grappling with the aftermath of two failed marriages and a stalled writing career. Sara, an Atlanta attorney, struggles with guilt over her son’s illness and her own slowly unraveling marriage. Annie, a successful Nashville businesswoman married to her childhood sweetheart, can’t seem to leave behind the regrets of her youth. And Lola, sweet-tempered and absentminded, whiles away her hours–and her husband’s money–on little pills that keep her happy.

Now the friends, all in their forties, converge on Lola’s lavish North Carolina beach house in an attempt to relive the carefree days of their college years. But as the week wears on and each woman’s hidden story is gradually revealed, these four friends learn that they must inevitably confront their shared past: a failed love affair, a discarded suitor, a betrayal, and a secret that threatens to change their bond, and their lives, forever.

Darkly comic and deeply poignant, Beach Trip is an unforgettable tale of lifelong friendship, heartbreak, and happiness.

On Friday I received:

Swimsuit by James Patterson from Hachette (thank you Miriam Parker)
The Beach
A breathtakingly beautivul supermodel disappears from a swimsuit photo shoot at the most glamorous hotel in Hawaii. Only hours after Kim McDaniels goes missing, her parents receive a terrifying phone call. Fearing the worst, they board the first flight to Maui and begin the hunt for their daughter.

Will Never
Ex-cop Ben Hawkins, now a reporter for the L.A. Times, gets the McDaniels assignment. The ineptitude of the local police force defies belief--Ben has to start his own investigation for Kim McDaniels to have a prayer. And for Ben to have the story of a lifetime.

The Same For You Again
All the while, a killer sets the stage for his next production. His audience expects the best--and they won't be disappointed. Swimsuit is a heart-pounding story of fear and desire, transporting you to a place where beauty and murder collide and horrors are hidden with paradise.

April and Oliver by Tess Callahan from Hachette

April and Oliver have been soul mates since childhood, and the attraction between them has always been palpable. Now, years after being completely inseparable, they have become strangers, but the wildly different paths of their lives are about to collide once again with the sudden death of April's brother.

Sexual tension builds as Oliver the responsible, newly engaged law student, finds himself drawn more than ever to the reckless, mystifying April--and dcracks begin to appear in his carefully constructed life. Even as Oliver attempts to "save" his childhood friend from her grief, her menacing boyfriend, and herself, it soon becomes apparent that Oliver has some secrets of his own--secrets he hasn't shared with anyone, even his fiancee.

Yet April knows. Is it really her life that's unraveling, or is it his own? The answer awaits at the end of a downward spiral...toward a surprising revelation.

The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand from Hachette

What happened between Greg MacAvoy and April Peck?

On the Tiny island of Nantucket, everybody's business is everyone's business. When the charming, talented music teacher Greg MacAvoy shares a rainy Sunday night with beautiful high school senior April Peck, rumors swarm the island like tourists on Memorial Day. The stories strain Greg's marriage, and his wife, Tess, is torn between her love for her husband and a secret of her own. With their anniversary approaching, the MacAvoys head out on their sailboat to celebrate, hoping the roughest waters are behind them.

But instead comes the heartbreaking news: Greg and Tess have mysteriously drowned, leaving behind two small children. Their closest friends--the Kapenashes, Drakes and Wheelers--are devastated. For as long as anyone can remember, the four couples have vacationed and celebrated together, confided in and depended on one another. But tragedy brings long-simmering conficts and emotions to the surface. The six friends, upended by grief and denial, set out to answer the question: What happened to Greg and Tess MacAvoy?

A page turnning story of passion and suspense, The Castaways is a masterful exploration of the boundaries of friendship and forgiveness, filled with the perfect details of summer life that have made Elin Hilderbrand's novels bestsellers nationwide.

The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner from Random House

This is what happened...
It was a case guaranteed to spark a media feeding frenzy--a young mother, blond and pretty, disappears without a trace from her South Boston home, leaving behind her four-year-old daughter as the only witness and her handsome, secretive husband as the prime suspect.

In the last six hours...
But from the moment Dectective Sergeant D.D. Warren arrives at the Joneses' snug little bungalow, she senses something off about the wholesome illusion the couple worked so hard to create.

Of the world as I knew it...
With the clock ticking on the life of a missing woman and the media firestorm building, Jason Jones seems more intent on destroying evidence and isolating his daughter than searching for his "beloved" wife. Is the perfect husband trying to hide his guilt--or just trying to hide? And will the only witness to the crime be the killer's next victim?
So you can see that I will be a very busy girl in the next few weeks!

Weekly Geeks: 2009-22, Catching Up On Reviews

Weekly Geeks is a posting meme held over at the Weekly Geeks blog. This weeks question is:

1. In your blog, list any books you’ve read but haven’t reviewed yet. If you’re all caught up on reviews, maybe you could try this with whatever book(s) you hope to finish this week. (Be sure to leave a link to this post either in the comments of this post, or in the Mister Linky below.)

2. Ask your readers to ask you questions about any of the books they want. In your comments, not in their blogs. (Most likely, people who will ask you questions will be people who have read one of the books or know something about it because they want to read it.)

3. Later, take whichever questions you like from your comments and use them in a post about each book. Link to each blogger next to that blogger’s question(s).

4. Visit other Weekly Geeks and ask them some questions!

So here goes:

I haven't reviewed:

The 8th Confession by James Patterson
Missing Pieces by Joy Fielding
The Disappearance of Irene Dos Santos by Margaret Mascarenhas
The Texas Billionaire's Bride by Crystal Green
Montana Sky by Nora Roberts (audio)
Under Her Skin by Susan Mallery
Look Again by Lisa Scottoline

So do you have any questions for me?

Review and Giveaway: Fragment by Warren Fahy (release date: 6/16/09)

Fragment Fragment by Warren Fahy

rating: 5 of 5 stars
From the back of the arc:

The time is now. The place is the Trident, a long-range research vessel hired by the reality show sealife. Aboard is a cast of ambitious young scientists. With a director thirsting for drama, tiny Henders Island might be just what the show needs. Until the first scientist sets foot on Henders-and the ultimate test of survival begins.

For this is not a lost world frozen in tmie, an island of mutants, or a lab where science has gone mad: this is Earth as it might have looked after evolving on a separate path for half a billion years. Here scientists will stumble on something more shocking than anything humanity has ever encountered: because among the terrors of Henters Island, one life form defies any scientific theory-and must be saved at any cost.

What if an ecosystem was found that was so different from our current one and what would happen if that ecosystem escapes it's current small island in the middle of the Pacific? That is the question Mr. Fahy's debut novel tackles.

A frightening question and a frightening book to go with it. This book hooked me from the first page and held onto me until the last. Not only is there non-stop action and suspense in this novel, but the characterization is interesting too. From the scientists and the crew on the Trident, to several world-renowned scientists who are brought to the island to help make decisions, you learn about each of them (at least the cast of main characters). I like how Mr. Fahy doesn't just throw the renowned scientists in, but gives you some backstory on them and you start to like (or dislike depending on the character) them and get to know them.

On the back of the book it calls this science-based suspense and that is exactly what it is. I haven't read a novel like this since reading some of Michael Crichton's novels. Science is interspersed throughout and though I work in Marine Science and have some background, most of it was still very new to me, but didn't feel over my head. You don't get lost in the scientific details or feel like skimming over them, they are part of the story and fascinating.

I can't recommend this book enough. It's a different, thrilling, amazing ride and a great way to spend several hours. I could see this as a movie in my head and it would make a great movie.

Thanks to Bantam Dell for sending me this book for review. I will be checking out this author in the future and hope this is a first book that leads to many.

This book releases on June 16th, 2009 (next Tuesday)

Booking Through Thursday - Niche

btt button

Here is this week's Booking Through Thursday question:

There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)

But then there are books that only YOU read. Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easy steps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring your house without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.

What niche books do YOU read?

Sewing books, Scrapbooking idea books and books about running are my niche books, with occasional nutrition, workout-type self-help books. I sew and scrapbook so those make sense - they inspire me and give me projects to do. Running books also inspire me so I love those.

Review: Once Smitten, Twice Shy by Lori Wilde (Wedding Veil Wishes #2)

Once Smitten, Twice Shy Once Smitten, Twice Shy by Lori Wilde

rating: 4 of 5 stars

From amazon.com:

Wedding videographer Tish Gallagher is at the end of her rope. Her business is about to go bust. She's just spent her last buck on nonreturnable (but oh so fabulous) shoes. And her most sustainable relationship is with a pint of Haagen Dazs. So she makes a wish on the lucky wedding veil to get out of debt...and sees the man she never stopped loving, her ex-husband, secret service agent Shane Tremont. Sure, their chemistry was off-the-charts sizzling hot, but their clashes were legendary, and no amount of longing will change that.

When her dream job of recording the first daughter's wedding appears out of the blue, Tish knows it's her only shot to get out of the red. Just one teensy glitch: Shane is the groom. From the moment they see each other, she knows nothing's changed--the same old black magic is still between them, as irresistible and potent as ever. But he's promised to another and Tish has been burned before. Will she always be...ONCE SMITTEN, TWICE SHY?

This is the second installment in the Wedding Veil Wishes series involving four friends and a mysterious wedding veil that seems to grant a wish to the holder.

In this installment we learn more about Tish, who is divorced yet still in love with her ex-husband Shane. I didn't know much about either one at the beginning but Ms. Wilde slowly clues you in to both of them throughout the book and you learn more about their courtship, marriage and divorce as the story moves along. And that is really where the love story is since a lot of the book Shane is actually engaged to someone else. But it really works. You always knew they would get together in the end, so I liked the added twist of someone else being involved.

Both Tish and Shane are very likeable characters. I have a little of Tish in me and a lot of other women would agree. Shane is an amazing hero - and really a hero you find out reading the book. Both learn a lot about each other and themselves as you read through the book and that learning process is another thing that is central to the plot of the book.

There is a small suspense plot involved and I didn't really see what happened coming so that was very well done also.

All-in-all this was a very enjoyable read and I will definitely keep reading this series. Ms. Wilde has put together a very fun set of characters and the wedding veil link is fun also. So if you like romance and want to get caught up in a book, I highly suggest Once Smitten, Twice Shy.

Publisher: Forever (Warner Books)
# Pages: 320
Genre: Contemporary Romance (humor too)
Binding: Paperback
Series: Wedding Veil Wishes #2 (There Goes the Bride is book #1 - review here)

Waiting on Wednesday - June 10

Jill at Breaking the Spine hosts Waiting On" Wednesday where everyone posts what new not-yet-published books we are anxiously awaiting. I'm new to this one also but I am looking forward to being a part of it and seeing all the wonderful new releases out there (and hoping my library will get the online card catalog back up so I can reserve books again).

My Entry for this week is:

From Amazon.com:
Two years ago, Neil Banks walked into a bathroom in the Pacific Fertility Center to provide his former college girlfriend, Jenny Callahan, with the biological material needed to conceive a child. Becoming a father was not part of the deal: adrift in his postmodern Los Angeles lifestyle, he signed away all paternity rights. But on the day of the baby’s christening, Neil turns up at the church. His unexpected—and unauthorized—return to Jenny’s privileged East Coast world sends a shockwave through the families of Jenny and her two college roommates—and sets off this deeply funny and keenly observed novel about fertility, love, and American excess.
This book will be released August 3, 2009. So what are you waiting on this week?
