The Alphabet in Crime Fiction: B, author Terri Blackstock

Another week, another perusal of the 2004-present spreadsheet I keep of books read.  Since the author thing was pretty easy last week, I thought I would do that again this week.  So who is the author?

Terri Blackstock

I started reading Terri Blackstock with her Cape Refuge series.  It's four books that focus on a small town and crimes and mysteries and on it's police chief, Chief Cade and Blair and Morgan Owens.  There are romance threads that run through the books, but what stood out to me the most was the central plot line of each book being a crime that needed to be solved.  They were great books to me and I will hunt down more of her books when I get a chance (she has several more series and most are mystery).  She is a Christian writer and though there are Christian themes in her books, they are well done and not just thrown in there for fun, they become central to the story.

2011 Challenge: Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2011

Jamie at The Book Junkie's Bookshelf is hosting the 2011 Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge. She writes:

I participated in this challenge last year when it was hosted by J. Kayes book blog. But it seems that J. Kaye is no longer blogging and I really wanted to do this challenge again so I thought that I would try my hand at hosting it.

The Rules:

• Anyone can join.
• You don't need a blog to participate.
• Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post on Jamie's blog.
• Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Young Reader – basically any book counts just as long as it is checked out from the library. Books MUST be checked out like with a library card, books purchased at a library DO NOT count.

I read over 50 books from the library in 2010 (and still have a few to finish) so I think I'm going to join at Mega Size :)  I love my library and my librarians know me when I walk in the door.  They even know they don't have to call me when my reserves are in (I check online constantly).  I love my library and love doing this challenge.  I'll add my books read and links to reviews as I finish books.

2011 Challenge: 2011 Audio Book Challenge

I'm going to join this one at the Obsessed level again this year. I easily read 1-2 books per month while listening in the car on the way to and from work (after I drop the kids off and before I pick them up) and also from time-to-time at work.  So this should be a breeze and lots of fun.  I actually use audiobooks to catch up on some popular series, like the Tempe Brennan series by Kathy Reichs and the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich and I'm lucky that my library has most of these available to me.

2011 Challenge: Book Blogger Recommendation Challenge

2011 Challenge: Reading From My Shelves Project 2011

Diane at Bibliophile By the Sea is once again hosting the Reading From My Shelves Project for 2011.  This is one I really need to take part in as my reading pile has grown by leaps and bounds but my space has not.

Here are the details (from Diane):

• Challenge runs from January 1 - December 31, 2011.
• Read books from your own shelves, and then pass the books on to someone else: a friend, relative, the library, used book store, swap them, just as long as the book leaves your house once it has been read.  
• Decide on your goal (12 is the minimum - no maximum). Cross over books are allowed.
• Grab the button and do a post about the challenge.
• Keep a running list of the books you've read and passed on.
•  Leave a comment on this post with a link to your post and you are entered. (

So my goal will be 24 - that's two a month and it will nicely coincide with some of my other challenges. I look forward to reading and completing this challenge.

2011 Challenge: Edgar Awards Reading Challenge

iubookgirl is hosting the Edgar Awards Reading Challenge on her blog.  This is her first challenge and I think it's a great one.  It's pretty simple, choose your level and read books from the list of Edgar Award winning books you can find at this site (just a hint, choose the Search the Edgars database in the top graphic and you can search and get all the winners in any category).

I'm going to choose the Sergeant level which is 4-6 books.  I think I can do this.  Mystery is one of my favorite genres and just a glance through the award winners and I saw several books I really wanted to read.

2011 Challenge: 2011 Debut Author Challenge

I love trying out new authors and I love YA/MG books so this is just the challenge for me.  The Story Siren is hosting the 2011 Debut Author Challenge so head over there for more details.  It's pretty simple, read at least 12 debut YA/MG authors in 2011.  If you want to read more, you can, there is no upper limit.  After you read the guidelines, you can sign up here.

I'm going to set my goal for 30 and hope to read more than that, but I also have a focus on getting some of my older books read this year so I don't want to over commit.

2011 Challenge: Book Bucket List

Another great challenge to join is Bookworm Lisa's Book Bucket List Challenge.  It's simple, decide the number of books you want to clear off of  your tbr bookshelf/pile and read them.  No fancy rules or anything.  Since I have a large tbr pile and bookshelf that gets larger by the day, I definitely want to join in on this one.  Because of reviews, library books and new books, I'm going to set my number to 12, simply one a month.  If I do more great, if I make this number wonderful - because I'm not sure that I have read one thing from my tbr pile this year.

2011 Challenge: 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die Challenge

January 1 2011 – Decemeber 31 2011

Here is another fun challenge to expand my reading horizons a little bit.  I found it over at A Novel Challenge Blog.  Here is more information:

Caitie is hosting her very first challenge, the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die Challenge.  She writes:

I got this book for Christmas a couple years ago and am slowly making my way through the list. I have discovered some amazing books and writers. I don’t expect to ever read all of the books – but I do want to make a dent in the list and want to open it up for other to join me! The list is so great because it has a huge variety! There are classics that you may have read in school, but there are also some great books we have all missed and some fantastic world literature.

The challenge is simple – read some books from the list! If you don’t own the actual book, you can find a simple list online. For the most basic, check out the Listology list. There are spreadsheets outs there that you can look at too that are more complex.

Levels:

High School Diploma: 5 books from the list
Bachelor’s Degree: 6-10 books from the list
Master’s Degree: 11-15 books from the list:
PHd: 16+

Rules:

You don’t have to make a list beforehand.
You can use any version of the list, not just the current, since they update it every couple years

2011 Challenge: The Alphabet in Crime Fiction Challenge

I've never joined this type of challenge before, but it sounds like a lot of fun.  Crime Fiction is one of my favorite genres so this shouldn't be too difficult and will give me one weekly post that will challenge me, so it sounds fun.  Here is more information about it:

Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise is once again hosting the very popular Alphabet in Crime Fiction for 2011.

Rules are pretty simple, each week, starting Monday January 10, 2011, Kerrie will post a letter to use for the week.  By the end of the week you must post something that uses either the first letter of the book's title, the first letter of the author's first name or the first letter of the author's surname.  The post can be a review, bio of the author or anything that fits the rules.  Posts must be completed by the end of the week and linked back to the post for each week (check Kerrie's blog for the post)

• Each week, beginning Monday 10 January 2011, you write a blog post about crime fiction related to the letter of the week.
• Your post MUST be related to either the first letter of a book's title, the first letter of an author's first name, or the first letter of the author's surname.
• You could write a review, or a bio of an author, so long as it fits the rules somehow.

Since I received my Kindle this past February I have obtained a lot of free ebooks from Amazon and have yet to read one of them.  So when I saw the Show Me the Free Reading Challenge hosted by The Unread Reader, I knew I wanted to join.

I am going to sign up at the Coupon Clipper level which is the minimum, 12 Books.  I'm doing the minimum because I know how hard it is for me to get to the books I own versus the books I need to review.  But this way I'm committing to reading at least 1 book a month.
