Echook Promo and Giveaway

A 10-MINUTE ESCAPE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND?
WE HAVE AN APP FOR THAT!
Let eChook take you away

The best of two worlds have merged to bring the overworked and under-rested 10-minutes of transcendent bliss. Award-winning short story writer Tessa Smith McGovern has wedded the restorative nature of getting lost in a story to the immediacy of modern technology to bring readers eChook. More than brain candy, eChook offers apps full of well-written short stories that soothe the soul like 10-minutes of literary gourmet chocolate.

Taking from the idea of the chapbook -- small, single-chapter books that were the latest technology in 16th-century England -- McGovern developed eChook, an app that turned her linked short stories into digital chapbooks. She wanted to reimagine the short story genre for a generation that does too much and rests too little. “Life-affirming, thoughtful stories can help us relax so we can attend that next meeting, collect the kids or greet our families with more energy and joy,” McGovern says.

There are several ways to enjoy eChook. Readers can buy full-color chapbooks from the app store in almost a dozen ways: on their iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, from www.eChook.com or iTunes, and coming soon on Kindle or Nook. Choices include collections of short stories linked by a single theme (such as Memoir) or collections of linked short stories that follow engaging characters through different adventures. Each app features information pages with enriched content such as “About the Author,” and “Memoir and Fiction.” eChook offers short stories that are light in your pocket and on your pocket book.

I look forward to speaking with you about the biggest little thing in publishing and escaping to a relaxing world in the palm of your hand.

###
Tessa Smith McGovern was born in Croydon, Surrey, England, shipped off to boarding school at 11, and left home for good at 16. She worked as a sales assistant in a jewelry shop, a secretary in a second hand car dealership, and sang in a band. At 22, she lived in Spain for a year, working as a waitress, followed by a year in Austria as a nanny, then a tour guide. She moved to the United States at age 30.

Her first short story was published in 1996. Many of her early stories were what we call short shorts, sometimes referred to as flash or micro fiction. They were indeed short, between 100 and 750 words. Tessa believes that “A short short is like a poem. Every word matters. I love the way they can capture those moments when the ‘cotton wool of daily life’ parts to reveal something unexpected.”

After a few years of publishing short shorts in literary magazines, Tessa began to notice a tendency towards what she calls catastrophic thinking. It dominated her short-short stories and had started to seep into her daily life. “One day,” she says, “I was walking my dogs on the beach and saw a helicopter appear on the horizon. I imagined it firing at me, shots landing on the beach, fountains of sand gushing like tiny oil wells ino the air. My heart started to pound and my face and chest got hot, and I realized my imagination wasn’t doing me any favours.”

That’s when she began writing longer pieces of about 1500 words. These, she felt, would give her more dramatic options. “By accident, I discovered there are two types of short short stories. There are the snapshot stories that fully describe a moment, like Virginia Woolf’s ‘Green’, that are usually up to 750 words in length. Then there are the longer short shorts, often between 750 and 2000 words, which have a beginning, middle and end.” She found that stories with a more complex narrative required some plotting, and that the rapid-fire, spontaneous eruptions of imagination became diluted by more leisurely periods of consciously-directed thought. “The flood of characters and situations slowed down for me, and the writing process turned into a delightful balance of plot and inspiration.”

Then she discovered humor. “One day, I read about a group of senior citizens in England who were stealing all the free biscuits at their local cinema every Wednesday morning. The cinema handed out a letter, reprimanding them for being biscuit-thieves, and they were deeply offended.  It was so funny I put it into a story called ‘Hissing Sid’ and was amazed to find that, every morning, I couldn’t wait to work on it. Now I strive to pinpoint those moments when reality and happiness meet. Life can be painful, but there are times when things turn out well. I’ve discovered that there’s always something funny lurking nearby, if we can relax enough to see it.”

Interview with Author Jeff Bennington (Reunion)

Today I have an interview with author Jeff Bennington who is currently touring the blogosphere to promote his book Reunion (my review coming later today).  So join me in welcomin Jeff to My Reading Room today!

Hi Crystal. Before we begin the interview, I’d like to tell your readers that I’m
giving away a Kindle on May 15th. If they’d like to enter, all they have to do is go to
jeffbennington.com and follow 2 simple directions. Good Luck!

Describe a typical writing day.

I only get to write two days in a row and then I have to take two days off because of my work schedule. That actually works out quite well, because by the time I get back at it, I’m ready to write. I hit it hard and heavy. I start out with a cup of coffee and then lay down anywhere from 2,000-3,000 words. Editing is much slower. I’m a slow reader.

How has the response been to Reunion; it's such a controversial topic? (However I will note that you don't make it political or about choosing sides - you make it about the people and I really enjoy that aspect).
The response has been incredible! Every review has been encouraging. The thing that surprises me the most is how attached the readers are getting to the characters.  When I write a book, it can be hard to know how a reader will respond, because I know every detail, so much so that I get desensitized to the plot twists and
characters. I still feel the emotional moments, because they were emotional to write, but I guess I didn’t know how believable the characters would be to my readers.

Do remember where you were when you first heard about the Columbine
shootings?

I was at work. I had just started my apprenticeship in January. Life was pretty exciting for me. We had two little boys at the time, so when I came home and watched the news that evening, I was stunned. I hadn’t heard of school shootings before. I remember looking at my boys, and for the first time, worried about their
future.

Crystal:  I was actually on vacation with friends and they had a 3-year-old little boy and I remember her fear and I remember at the time I was glad I didn't have children, of course the very next year we had our first son.  I don't think a day goes by that I don't think about it.

Was Reunion easy to write or was it difficult?
LOL! Is any book easy to write? A co-worker of mine was asking me about this earlier today. He asked if I’d sign his copy of Reunion and then asked me how I do it. He wanted to know how I came up with all the details and dialogue and ideas.  Although I really don’t have a good answer for that, I told him I make a small
outline and then fill in the gaps, transposing what I see in my imagination, as if I’m describing a movie that’s playing in my mind. Is that easy? I don’t think so. You have to be a very detail oriented person to write and polish a good novel. I think I have a natural talent for writing and I REALLY enjoy it, so I think it’s easier for me than for someone who doesn’t have a love for writing carved in their heart like I do.

What is your writing office like?
I’ll write on my breaks at work. We have four kids so when I’m at home I write anywhere it’s quiet, the bedroom, the livingroom, the breakfast nook, the garage, starbucks, the back porch or in the car…I don’t care where I do it as long as it’s quiet.  Although sometimes I’ll play mood music depending on the scene.

Crystal:  Oh my - I have two kids and when I have to work at home with them I am pretty sure I am going to go crazy so my hat is off to you!

How much research did you need to write Reunion?
I usually research as needed, but with Reunion I was curious about how the survivors respond to school shootings and PTSD long before I wrote the book. If I had to guess, I’d say I put in about 10-20 hours of reading before I felt comfortable creating my own cast of survivors.

What is your favorite snack food?
Hmmm? I’m not a big snacker, but I’d say cheese/crackers type snacks. I do love my coffee!

Night owl or morning person?
Hoo Hoo! I work from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for two days and then I’m off. Two days later, I come back and do it again. That makes me half night owl and half lunatic!

What do you have in the works right now?
My next release, Act of Vengeance, is ready for editing. When I’m not writing for the blog tour, I’m working on Federal Underground, a story about a struggling creative writing student (Penn Mitchell) who disappears and shows up on his mother’s front porch three months later with a Novel screaming to get out of his head. The book soon becomes a bestseller, but when the FBI discovers that the book is filled with
top-secret information they bring Penn in for questioning. When the interrogation goes bad, Penn escapes deep into the Federal Underground, guided only by the information inside his book, to prove his innocence and to find out how and why he knows about the world’s darkest secret. Federal Underground is coming along very nicely. I should have it done by the end of the summer.

I also plan to have Act of Vengeance edited very soon (coming late 2011). Act of Vengeance is about Rick Burns, a struggling Indianapolis police detective, who encounters a ghostly boy. The mysterious kid takes Rick on a wild ride through the city, revealing the dark force behind several unsolved murders and the detective’s dark past. Act of Vengeance has the supernatural mystique of Sixth Sense and the freakiness of Damien.

Thank you so much for having me!

If your followers are interested in Reunion, they can get it now for only .99!
Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Reunion-ebook/dp/B004S7AR0E

REUNION Synopsis:
David Ray killed eight students and then turned the gun on himself. He thought the shooting and suicide would fix his world. It didn't. The massacre threw Tanner Khan and the other survivors into chaos.

Twenty years later, Tanner and his fellow classmates reluctantly agree to hold a reunion to lay the past to rest. Although they suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, they come back to their hometown and reunite in the defunct school building. Old flames are rekindled, fears are ignited, and their lives are about to explode in a whirlwind of memories, haunted by the spirit of David Ray.

Once inside the old school, they discover that a dark entity has joined them. It has come to collect a debt, long overdue, and someone has to pay. Will Tanner and his classmates overcome their fears and put the pieces of their lives back together, or will they be consumed by their worst nightmare?

****This multi-genre thriller has, at times, elements of the supernatural, horror, romance, and certainly suspense, without disregard for the trauma and long term Post Traumatic Stress that many survivors will deal with the rest of their lives.

Book Review: Semi-Sweet by Roisin Meaney

Semi-Sweet: A Novel of Love and CupcakesSemi-Sweet: A Novel of Love and Cupcakes by Roisin Meaney
Publisher: 5 Spot
Publish Date: April 25, 2011
Paperback, 400 pages
Fiction
 ISBN: 978-0446570114

**Check out my giveaway here.**

My Review:
Why I read this: One word - cupcakes, yum!  And isn't the cover just delightful - the old bike, the yummy cupcakes.  You want to walk right into the cover.

My thoughts:  Delightful and absorbing, spend an afternoon with the residents of this small town in Ireland and enjoy their stories.

Semi-sweet gave me so much more that I thought it would.  From the blurb I was thinking it was a chick-lit type book focusing on Hannah's life as she recovers from a break-up and opens her own business.  While Hannah is the star of the book, it truly involves a lot of people in the town of Clongarvin.  It's one of those books where the small town and it's inhabitants really come to life through the story.  There are ups and downs for the story characters.  There is what-goes-around-comes-around.  There are delightful characters and nosy characters and characters that you didn't expect at all.  And at the end of the book you feel like you have gotten to know all of them.

I truly enjoyed reading this book - it was different from a lot of books I read where you tend to learn about one set of characters at a time, or one family.  This one branches out to bridge club, co-workers and even old schoolmates.  There is some of everything, romance, lust, friendship and lifelong marriage.  I really loved how Ms. Meaney showed all walks of like and how real the characters seemed.  Hannah's parents seemed like an older married couple, the wife gossiping and talking, the husband listening while going on with what he is doing, yet they love each other dearly.  Hannah and her best friend Adam are also another great relationship.  All outsiders wonder why they have never gotten together, but they just know it wouldn't work and that they work best as friends.

I can't say enough about this book and I will be finding more of Ms. Meaney's books in the future.  I think she has a knack for giving characters a great story and bringing them to life before your eyes.

My Rating: 4.5/5.0

About the Book:

Hannah Robinson, is just about to open the doors to her new shop Cupcakes on the Corner when out of the blue her boyfriend Patrick announces that he's leaving her for another woman. Faced with starting a business on her own, Hannah begins to wonder if her life-long dream has just turned into a nightmare.

So her best friend Adam sets his birthday as a deadline - seven months to make her shop a success, or walk away from it all. And as Hannah immerses herself in early-morning icing, she soon discovers that she's too busy to think about Patrick and his now pregnant girlfriend ...or to notice an increasingly regular customer who has recently developed a sweet tooth for all things cupcake.

But while Hannah is slowly piecing her life back together, family friend Alice's is falling apart. Her husband Tom's drinking is getting out of control and things are about to get a whole lot worse. As the seven-month milestone approaches, Hannah must decide her future. And while she's figuring out what's really important, it becomes clear to everyone that happiness in life, and in love, is all in the making.
