Review, Blog Tour and Giveaway: A Black Tie Affair by Sherrill Bodine

 

 My Review:

I really like the concept behind this book - the look into vintage couture dresses and jewelry fascinates me.  I am a home sewer and love vintage wear and live for stories about couture.  I could envision the beautiful dresses and wanted to see them myself.  The story of how Athena runs into Drew again after all these years and the problem with the dresses from his family vault is great in concept.  Most of the book had me enthralled.  But overall I was left feeling kind of ho-hum about it.  I think the execution was hurried by the end - most of the book was spent developing a wonderful story, but not enough time was given to concluding it.  It was really hurried.

That said - I did enjoy this book and look forward to reading more by Ms. Bodine.  I am guessing there are more stories in this series coming since Athena has two more sisters.  I also want to read Talk of the Town.  The characters in A Black Tie Affair are great - I loved Athena, she is struggling with her feelings for Drew and her own self-confidence which is somewhat linked to Drew.  Drew truthfully hasn't forgotten Athena but he still feels betrayed by her actions from long ago.  The attraction starts right back up when they meet but they are both fighting it and each other.  There is great tension and mystery in the book and the romance is good.  It is a good book - I just wish it had been a little longer.

However I suggest you check it out for yourself as this is just my opinion.

Summary -
Another great reading and reviewing week.  I managed to keep up even with returning to work.  I hope I can continue.  I have a stack of review books, a stack of library books, a bunch of new ebooks and too many to count on my bookshelf.  So I won't be bored any time soon.

A crazy fashion-obsessed young adult novel that has meaning and is fun to read. I loved Poseur.

Within the first few pages I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but as it went along I was sucked right in. Petra, Janie, Melissa and Charlotte couldn't be more different. That is established in the beginning. They all come from different backgrounds and are part of four different cliques at their high school. When a group study program lands them together to launch their own fashion label, things begin to go crazy.

The characters in this are very interesting. They continue to develop through the book through interaction with each other and with others. I enjoyed getting to know each of them, at times I didn't like them and at other times they began to redeem themselves. Through getting to know each other they begin to all change for the better without losing themselves.

The antics can be zany but the voice of each character comes through clear and their is a lesson to be learned in the end. I think this is a wonderful book - full of the fun of young adult books, but with a built-in lesson that doesn't bang kids over the head - it's just there to be taken however you want to take it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and seeing more of Petra, Janie, Melissa and Charlotte.  

I also loved the fashion sketches at the end of the book - I wish I had it to keep and try out some of the patterns, but I had to return it to the library.

The Choice is beautifully written and the plot and characters well-developed.  I felt like I was a part of the Amish Community along with Carrie.

This is a wonderful book.  From the moment I picked it up I was drawn in and when I would put it down the next time I picked it up I was swept up again.  So much is going on in this book, yet it's not overwhelming.  I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters and look forward to seeing them again in future books of this series.  I especially enjoyed Carrie.  I felt I was right there with her going through the decisions she had to make.  Ms. Fisher does a wonderful job in getting into the mind of a young Amish woman and to the mind of the collective community.  There is so much I didn't know about the Amish religion and community and I feel I come away from this book having learned something.  I think we can all learn something from the way the Amish put others first.  They take care of their own and it is wonderful to witness.

Carrie struggles some with her faith in the book, but truly she understands that God knows all and will take care of her.  So much goes wrong in her life, yet she stands with God, only struggling with what she should do with her life.  It's a beautiful story of giving up your life to God who does know what will happen and how He will take care of you.

I also enjoyed the love story in this - it is so simple and beautiful to witness.  Not only the romantic love but the community love and how differences are put aside in the end to find the love.  Ms. Fisher has written a very engaging story that is full of love, mystery, and characters that will make you feel at home and make you never want to leave the quite Amish town in Pennsylvania.  Thankfully we get to return in October when the second book in the series, The Waiting, is released.


Suzanne Woods Fisher's interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Dunkard Brethren Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine.
